Ne serait-ce pas the statue of the Duke of Wellington in front of the Gallery of Modern Art ?-)
which permanently has a traffic cone on its head
Many years ago, some night-time revellers climbed up on the pompous statue of the Duke of Wellington outside the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow and placed a traffic cone on his head. Although it was removed, it kept magically reappearing and eventually the authorities gave up trying to keep Wellington without his modern headgear. Indeed, a few years ago, when Greater Glasgow & Clyde Valley Tourist Board wanted photographs to launch their new Web site, they removed the cone. Immediately, the Lord Provost, Alex Mosson, expressed disappointment, saying that it highlighted the Glaswegian sense of humour. His predecessor, ex-Provost Pat Lally joined in and also agreed it should stay on the "Joke of Wellington". The end result is that Wellington (and sometimes his horse too) can be seen sporting traffic cones. However, the "Iron Duke" statue, which was erected in 1844, has lost his spurs and sword in recent years thanks to revellers clambering up to replace the cone. A campaign, led by an art historian, has now been launched to save the statue. It is argued that Glasgow should not be encouraging such behaviour by praising the placing of a cone on Wellington's head. Lots of other statues in Glasgow have been vandalised (including the one of Donald Dewar, the late Scottish First Minister which now looks down sadly without his characteristic spectacles).
